Novel: Stargirl
Based on the article “No One Eats ALone”, it is about kids in middle school who are left out because they don’t fit in with other groups in the lunchroom. The others rather be with their friends than being with someone who they don’t know and who they don’t want to be with. This causes middle schoolers to become lonely and isolated. It also causes them to feel invisible since they have no one to sit and eat with. One quote from this article that supports this is “She would call me almost daily, ‘Mom, I have nobody to eat with, and the girls don’t want me to sit with them,’” Talmus said, who said her daughter would finish her lunch and call her from the restroom crying. “Lili was never teased or bullied, but was almost suffering as much because she felt invisible.” But then, a program created by Beyond Differences changed everything. They showed the kids that they should start a conversation with someone they don’t talk to and to also try to get to know that person.
The novel and article both address to the societal issue by telling us that no one should be left out just because they are different and not really someone you know. In the novel, there was one character who was different from the other kids. The other kids ended up not liking here and they thought that she was not the right person to join them. This relates to the article because other kids in the article don’t fit in the group. Another piece of textual evidence includes “It can all collide in the cafeteria and leave some kids feeling invisible if they don’t fit in at any one particular table”.
I can relate this issue to my own life when there was a time that I didn’t really know somebody. I didn’t really hang out with that person and I decided to only hang out with my friends. But then, as I got to know that person , I decided to become friend with him. So, this then taught me that I shouldn’t judge that person just because he is different. Instead I should interact with that person and become friends with him.
